Bunion splint is a relief after hiking the Grand Tetons

In one of my earlier blogs during the winter, I mentioned my moose slippers and how my bunions preferred them to my ski boots. Well now that summer is here, my bunions and I went to Wyoming to hike the Grand Teton National Park. The jagged Tetons jut up from beneath the valley floor – approaching 30,000 feet - much like my bunion bumps spring out of my big toe joints! After the day-long hike, I walked comfortably around the rustic cabin in my hinged bunion splint

Comfort after wearing a splint.

Thanks to this flexible splint, my feet with those bunions slipped comfortably into my new summer-time moose slippers!

Does Posh have a foot problem? She's in flats!

What is going on here?! Miss "I beyond hate ballerina flats" is at LAX in simple shoes! No sky-high stilleto, no teetering on shoes without a heel, but shoes the rest of us wear to the airport. Dare I ask if there is an orthotic in there?

We all know of Posh's bunion pain and things must really be getting bad. First, there were reports that she was wearing a night splint and resting her feet at home, then reports escalated to rumors of bunion surgery and doctors recommending an urgent bunionectomy... But I never thought I would see Victoria Beckham trade in her signature shoes for those of a commoner!

Now for all of you worried that Posh has lost of all her edge, don’t fret. She’s not shopping at DSW like the rest of us – her flats are $500 French Lanvin ballet flats, which are only available at retailers in Bal Harbor Florida and Las Vegas. So I guess if she’s going to fall from grace she might as well do it in style.

Bunions and fashion in airports hurt.

People watching. I love to watch people - how they walk, what they are wearing, intentions in their faces. What better place than in an airport. So I was amused when I saw images of celebrities walking through the airport in the PeopleStyleWatch magazine and web site.

fergie

The printed page featured "Glam" photos along the top showing celebrities dressed to the nines in high heels, dresses, and designer bags. And in fact some of these celebs suffer from bunion pain! Each had their heads tilted in a somewhat downward position focused on walking and with a forced smile. Cramming a bunion into sleek high-heels and having to look fashionable at an airport really hurts!

The second row of images, "Classic," featured celebrities in more relaxed attire, more casual shoes, but some rather high. They walked with more confidence and their heads held high.

The happiest group appeared in the third row which featured celebrities in their "Casual" attire of hoodies, sweats, and flat shoes, sandals, or sneakers. Some carried their loved ones, and others were able to walk, text message, and listen to their MP3 player - all at once. I bet it was the shoes, don't you?

Posh Spice to Get Bunion Surgery?

Victoria Beckham’s bunions have reportedly gotten so bad that she’s getting ready for a bunionectomy. Now, take this with a grain of salt because every time Posh Spice exposes her bunions the gossip magazines start quoting their sources but they’re saying that she’s staying home, icing her feet, and doing foot exercises in a desperate bid to avoid bunion surgery.

In 2003 there were reports that Vicky was hiding an awful secret in her stilettos (dun dun dun!) and in 2007 the story flared up again. She commented, “I hate my feet, they are the most disgusting thing about me. Part of the reason I wear such amazing shoes is to take the eye away from my horrid feet and on to the stunning shoes.” But now the tabloids are saying she’s just putting up with the pain of bunions in order to avoid surgery.

After years of wearing her trademark 6-inch stilettos, Posh now has to tend full time to her aching feet. She notoriously hates ballet slippers and flats (I wouldn’t dare ask her opinion on orthopedic shoes!) but would be ordered to stay off the high heels for a few months if she went through surgery. But Posh Spice just wouldn’t be posh on flats!

Alexander McQueen's Armadillo Shoes
Just looking at these shoes is making my feet hurt....

You know the crazy has hit the streets when Alexander McQueen's Armadillo Shoes are selling out. They premiered at the Spring/ Summer 2010 Fashion Show and became the talk of Fashion Week. But would any one actually wear them or are they just foot torture?

It was one thing when Lady Gaga wore them in her Bad Romance video and I could sort of understand when Daphne Guinness (a "style icon" or at least that's what wikipedia calls her) wore them on the red carpet in New York at the Nars party, but people are actually BUYING the 12 inch heels! So far no one has been photographed wearing the shoes on the streets there is still time.

McQueen's office has allegedly been flooded with inquires about the shoes and is reporting that they will sell out. They assume some people will buy them as art pieces but I mean really!? Can you actually walk in these without giving yourself a bunion?

Bunions and my beautiful feet

Like many women, my first thing to do every morning was look in the mirror to assess my body. No matter how other body parts failed my scrutiny, I always looked at my feet last - because they were perfect! They carried me everywhere, and despite the load, they looked beautiful. No calluses, corns, blisters or ugly veins, not to mention hammertoes. I dreamt that I might become a foot model.

Bunions spoiled my beautiful feet.

I did everything right to keep my feet healthy and pretty. I wore flat (but attractive)

shoes, had pedicures and my favorite: many foot massages & foot reflexology sessions.

To my surprise, despite all the care and attention, my feet changed when I turned 40. I developed a "bump" on the side of my feet and needed larger shoes. As a matter of fact, my shoe size seemed to continually increase, as did the bump. It didn't bother me at first, but when the balls of my feet started to hurt I knew I was in trouble. Hiking, one my favorite hobbies, became a painful event.

Even worse, one of the most painful results of the "bump" was - I had to give away the sexy and attractive shoes that I collected over the years, and the lack of exercise due to the foot pain led to even more middle age weight gain. My dream of becoming a model, even a foot model disappeared!

I felt I was on a downward spiral. I needed help - and I got it!

Out of the blue an old friend from Munich called and asked if I would introduce a new product from Germany to the U.S. market. I was interested. The new product was a patented and innovative splint that corrects the mal-positioning of the big toe/bunion or in medical terms, Hallux Valgus. After several weeks of research I found out that the "bump" on my feet was a bunion.

For several weeks the splint became my best friend - I wore it every night and a few hours during the day. And it paid off - the splint worked! I was able to start hiking and exercising again, free of pain!

I was so impressed with the splint that I became president of Alpha Orthotics Corp., and started to sell and distribute these German-engineered innovative orthotic products, beginning with Bunion Aid - the first hinged splint designed to correct painful bunions.

Maybe, my dream of becoming a foot model will come true after all!
